How to Export Layered PSDs to Spine 2D & Unity for Flawless Animation
5 min read
Introduction
Bringing 2D game characters to life requires proper asset preparation. Whether you are using Spine 2D or Unity 2D Animation, starting with a clean layered PSD source file is essential for smooth rigging and mesh deformation.
1. Layer Organization & Naming Rules
Before exporting from Photoshop or Illustrator, ensure each limb, torso, head, hair piece, and weapon is isolated on its own named layer. Avoid combining overlapping body parts into a single layer.
- head_face: Main facial expression and base.
- arm_upper_L & arm_lower_L: Separate upper and lower limbs for dual-joint IK setup.
- torso_chest & torso_hips: Allow spine curvature during crouch or attack animations.
2. Importing into Spine 2D
Use the official PhotoshopToSpine.jsx script to generate a pre-arranged Spine json structure with perfect pixel alignment.
3. Unity 2D Animation Setup
Import your PSD file directly using the 2D PSD Importer package in Unity to generate custom sprite bones directly in your engine hierarchy.
